At ease: When we start listening for our heartbeat it makes us more on guard and anxious, so our body produces adrenaline and that makes the heart beat harder (in case we have to run away from a bear or something). That's a normal reaction and if it goes away when you are paying attention to something else, that's a very good sign. Sounds like your equipment is working normally.

At 18 y/o: The most common cause of rapid heart besting in your case could be anxiety attacks, drug induced like caffeine beverages or medications, malnutrition, arrhythmias of the heart due to conduction heart problems. My advise is to see your physician for further history and physical exam.
