Mild illness if any: CMV is a virus which targets the immature nerves in the fetal brain as well as other organs. While it can be devastating if acquired as a fetus, infection in a term newborn or later rarely produces recognized illness or problems. Infants born prematurely that get it immediately have risk proportional to the degree of prematurity.
