GERD cough: The heartburn and cough may be connected. Heartburn usually is due to GERD (gastrointestinal reflux disorder), which can include stomach contents going up your esophagus when sleeping. That can cause cough because of small amounts getting into your larynx and trachea. It should improve with the treatment you are on, but contact your doctor if it's still a problem after another week or so.

? asthma: check again with your doctor, you may very well have asthma or reactive airway disease for any reason, reflux can aggravate it, trial of bronchodilators would help, you may need referral to an asthma specialist, an allergist/immunologist or a pulmonologist, good luck
