CIN 3: A smear with the statement, "compatible with CIN 3" means that abnormal cells were found on examination of the cervical smear. This may indicate what is called "dysplasia", which would require a biopsy (usually painless) on colposcopic examination. The abnormal cells will then be identified and treatment will follow to ensure a return to normal.

Extended pelvic exam: The pelvic exam will be just like a pap smear except the cervix will be viewed by a "microscope on wheels" (colposcope). This will allow your GYN MD to view in detail any areas of abnormality and take mini-samples (biopsy) to send to the Pathologist for analysis. The biopsies may produce minimal discomfort.
