Can be either...: Throat pain can be from strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees a doctor if the throat pain is bothersome or doesn't go away in 2 days, mainly to check for strep throat. Doctors usually use a 5-minute Rapid Strep test. Very sore throats are more likely strep.
