With lazy eye, is it common to switch or choose which eye to focus with?

No: A truly "lazy" eye in an adult (termed amblyopia) will not come up in vision if the lazy eye fixates. However there is one pattern called alternation in which each eye can function independently and the person can fixate with one or the other eye completly.

Sometimes: Some people have alternating fixation with their strabismus and they can switch eyes while focusing.
