Head trauma can damage the optic nerve. Some healing can occur over several years, but if he has had this since he was a child, there is a high likelihood that the damage is permanent. He can minimize these effects by wearing darkened, corrective lenses. He should consult a opthalmologist (eye MD) for evaluation.
