Seek advice: Depends on the condition being investigated. So for specifics need to discuss with the doctor who ordered it. In general M mode measures movement and 2D actual thickness. Both can be subject to operator dependent artefact so that's where need information re why done and what looking for. If remains unclear the cardiologist may order a more accurate transoesophageal echo to sort it out.

Truth is elusive: Yes U/S is the most operator dependant imaging study so a weak tech. confounds the whole issue. The radiologist has a chance to make the report make sense though. Failing that, the clinician can put it in context. Failing that, a repeat study should put this ugly matter to rest. Absolute measurements when borderline are not usu. reliable anyway.
