Do pleural effusion & pleural thickening look similar on chest x-ray & ct scan?

They can : Pleural thickening and effusion can appear very similar. Physiological differences include effusion being liquid and mobile with change in position while thickening is sometimes scar tissue or thicker slower moving substance. On ct may have somewhat different densities.
