Mgt: If there are open sores, I would suggest not doing so. Sometimes even prior to the outbreak there is viral transmission which can be serious in the newborn infant. Overall, I would suggest waiting until your baby has a more mature immune system. Keep the face clean with a gentle application of a moist wash cloth.
