A member asked:

When i am washing my hands after going to the toilet (i have hsv1 on my genitals for 8yrs) ,do i need to worry if a drop of water or soapy water hits my face? i normally after that wash my face frantically because i get worry it will spread to my lip?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Oral herpes lesions are usually contracted (even if the genital lesions are type II) due to inadvertent (unconscious) touching of the oral mucous membranes (lips) via casual contact with actual genital areas, as the genital infection is transmittable prior to actual herpes type ulceration is present. In any case, "soapy water" will not be the cause of transmission.
