Not really: Visual inspection (i.e. just looking) is how hemorrhoids are diagnosed. Digital rectal exam will detect many rectal cancers, but could easily miss anal cancer. If you are at risk of anal cancer (known anal HPV, or if you have been the receptive/bottom partner in anal sex), make sure your doctor knows.

Hemorrhoids.: Hemorrhoids are generally seen or palpated on examination. Depending on other clinical parameters or family history, one could pursue further with virtual colonoscopy, formal colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to determine whether or not there are other gastrointestinal findings of concern. The presence of hemorrhoids can make testing for blood in your stool misleading.
