Don't reinjure it: Cold compresses, elevation and ibuprofen. Keep off it as much as possible for 24-48 hours so you don't reinjure it. Best wishes

Buddy strapping: It is a wise idea to tape the bruised toe to the adjacent toe to immobilise it for 3-5 days. This would allow the inflammation to settle down. If the pain continues, you need to see your GP to get an X Ray done to rule out a fracture. Wearing tight fitting shoes can be helpful as well in immobilising the toe.

Strapping and time: Simple pain relief and strapping useful for a few days. If there is bleeding under the nail/injury to the nail worth getting seen as well as if not well aligned. Don't tend to X-ray the toes as you strap them if broken or sprained but if looks out of joint could see dr to align and strap. We have various tricks to sort it

Along with: Buddy strapping would also recommend wearing a hard sole shoe. This will prevent bending and thus pain in the toe. It may be sore for several weeks.

It varies.: I'm not quite sure that there is a "best way" to treat a stubbed toe. These type of injuries come in all degrees of severity. A general rule is to ice it, if necessary, as well as immobilization, when warranted. The key advice is avoid further injury. If there is any doubt as to the extent of the injury, seek an expert opinion.
