Possibly.: A sore throat w/white patches may be due to a virus or to a bacterial like strep. The only way to know for sure is to get seen by a doc & to get a strep culture. A Rapid strep is about the same price as a strep culture but has up to a 30% chance of being wrong. A throat culture is more expensive & unnecessary in most cases. So see a doc & get a strep culture only. If it is + you need antibiotics
