Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). If antibiotics are needed for strep, examples are amoxicillin or azithromycin.

Maybe/not: After a review of your pattern of symptoms, an exam & possibly some testing a doc might find something that would benefit from an antibiotic, or might not. Sore throats are often viral, but an office quick test could confirm or exclude that label. A general rule is the more symptoms the more likely viral & not in need of antibiotics. However, visit your doc to see for sure.
