Monometry test and endoscopy indicate type 3 achalasia. is barium swollow test still necessary? what additional value will it add?

The barium: swallow test is a "PRACTICAL" test of the ability of your esophagus to "handle" a BOLUS (large amount) of material and is used to decide if you need to have the opening widened (DILATED) Hope this is helpful Dr Z (Consider it a "practical" exam) Hope this helps Dr Z

Achalasia: The barium swallow test is rather useful in achalasia.. It gives us a way to judge the ability of the tight esophageal sphincter to allow substances to pass, in a way that endoscopy and manometry do not. Overall, it gives us a way to judge whether dilatation or surgery is necessary.
