Barium UGI and Manom: Barium Upper GI to start and esophageal manometry will easily determine which one you have.

Endoscopy offers advantages over X-Rays because this allows seeing esophageal lining, measuring pressures, issues relevant for both better diagnosis & treatment options.

Barium swallow: I do believe that the old fashioned barium swallow exam would diagnose achalsia and can, with maneuvers by the radiologist, demonstrate GERD. Have your primary care physician notify the radiologist of the reason that the barium swallow test is being ordered.
