Is a barium swallow alone useful for ruling out achalasia?

Although a barium swallow can give a definitive diagnosis for achalasia, there are other tests, such as an esophageal manometry, that can measure the actual pressures in the esophagus. If you have trouble swallowing, contact your doctor or a gastroenterologist. Good luck.
