That depends: ...on the doctor and their specific protocols and procedures. Some docs do not want to discuss results over the phone, and prefer it best to speak directly with the patient at a scheduled visit. You should practice safe sex always, but especially until you at the least get back the results. You can call you Doc and see what their procedure is, but be sure to keep your appt in any case. Probably yes: There are no rules on this -- every doctor is different. But most probably would inform a patient immediately if an HIV test is positive. It would be very unusual to wait 3 weeks. But if uncertain, give them a call.
