Blood clots: "Unprovoked" (without reason) blood clot is due to a underlined disease and you will be placed on blood thinner for life to prevent 2nd blood clot. If blood clot is due to immobility, surgery, medications...("provoked"), prevention for a 2nd blood clot is to avoid the risk factors, you don't have to take blood thinner for life. You can have blood clot on blood thinner if treatment is not adequate.

Recurrent DVT/PE. : It is true that having a DVT or PE will predispose you two having a future DVT or PE. Now, the longer you take blood thinners for the first episode the less of a chance you'll have a recurrent episode. I believe they've tested after 24 months of anticoagulant. Otherwise, risk of occurrence would be increased if you have a coagulopathy.
