A 34-year-old female asked:

got my tdap as a tetanus booster. i think some of the vaccine leaked down my arm. should the nurse have given me a new one? will i be boosted enough?

No need to worry: I am sure the vast majority of the vaccine got into you and that should be adequate to boost your immunity. Tetanus is fortunately quite rare but is a very interesting illness and there are still mysteries as to exactly what leads someone to get it; it is not as straightforward as most doctors believe. Yes: All vaccines and all medications and all medical interventions have side effects. Fortunately the common side effects of vaccines are mild and pass quickly. They include pain at the injection site, rashes, and fevers. Very rarely, more serious side effects are possible. If you think your child is having a significant reaction to a vaccine (or any medicine), contact your doctor.

Can a pregnant woman get meningococcal vaccine?

Dr. Marcus Degraw
Pediatrics 22 years experience
No and Yes: Menactra (one brand) is a pregnancy catagory c, which means risk to fetus cannot be ruled out. Menveo is category b, which means there is no evidence of risk to fetus in humans. Therefore Menveo can be given to a pregnant mother, if/when the benefits outweigh the risks. However, neither is specifically indicated or thoroughly studied in pregnant women. Discuss you risks and benefits with doc.

Ultrasound. : It is unusual for blood clots in the calf to cause severe pain. However, the test is simple. Get an ultrasound to rule this out because you already have a personal history of deep vein thrombosis.
