A member asked:

I was advised to have a ganglion cyst surgically removed from bottom of left foot by podiatrist. mri done as well. is this necessary?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: A ganglion cyst is a swelling in a tendon sheath due to irritation from tendon moving within sheath. Before I do any resection I usually aspirate the fluid with a #16 gage needle and inject approximately 5 cc of kenalog 40. In most instances recurrence does not occur. Doing an MRI serves no purposes since the process is localized and doesn't involve other tissue.
