It depends: It depends on how severely abnormal the pap result was. Mild, so called CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia) results, can spontaneously revert back to normal except CIN II and especially CIN III (severe dysplasia). CIN III can be considered cancer in a spot(carcinoma in situ). Pap smears beyond this level dictates cancer treatment and have varying prognosis based upon severity. Ask your MD.

Rather than worry...: Some abnormal pap smears do warn of a risk for malignancy, but the process takes time. We've got the follow-up down to a science so you won't be at serious risk for dying so long as you comply with instructions. In the Bad Old Days, cervical cancer was the major killer of young women. Now it's almost entirely manageable. Glad you're concerned; just follow up and you'll be fine.
