The inactivity: associated with surgery can lead to the development of blood clots but there is nothing specific about gall bladder surgery that increases the risk any more than other abdominal surgery. If he is ambulatory now and otherwise at low risk (nonsmoker, no previous clot, etc) than he should not need it. This is a question his doctor should address for you since he knows your father's medical history.
