If it is inserted more than 7 days after a period started, it is recommended that a back-up contraceptive method such as a condom is used until 7 days after IUD insertion. That means if Mirena is inserted the day after a period ends, and the period is less than 7 days long, it works right away.

You are protected: From the chronology you describe, you are protected against pregnancy now. I;m sure you are aware that Mirena will not protect you against STDs. Also, if you ever suspect pregnancy, please do a pregnancy test.
