What is the definition or description of: cherry red spots on retina?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Arterial occlusion: The most common cause of this is when the central retinal artery becomes occluded. The retinal ganglion cells in this case swell from anoxic edema but there are no such cells at the fovea, so the red circulation underneath the retina appears as a cherry red spot. This can also occur in inherited lipid storage diseases such as Niemann-Pick disease.
