Usually bleeding: Most red spots on the retina are due to blood vessel dilation (aneurysm) or bleeding (dots and blots). These may indicate diabetes, or some other vascular disease. Larger red spots can be due to macular detachment or vascular occlusion. Any new red spot should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist.
