True: Nexium, (esomeprazole) Prilosec and Protonix are part of the category of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPI), used to treat acid reflux (GERD). Long-term use (over 5 yrs) of PPI's can cause certain side effects: increased risk of getting vitamin B12 deficiency, osteoporosis, low magnesium, pneumonia, C diff infection and yes, decreased kidney function. Take lowest dosage for least amount of time.
