I see alot of doctors prescribe prilosec instead of nexium (esomeprazole) why is that? i thought it does the same thing.

Correct - insurance?: Prilosec (omeprazole:10,20mg) is available generic, and likely better covered by US insurance formularies. Nexium (esomeprazole: 40mg i.e. double) is an isomer (same chemical formula) with some property differences but not generic. Several other "proton pump inhibitors" available too, working by same mechanism. Some patients still may respond better with one over other, depending on the patient
