A member asked:

In a person 72 with rheumatoid arthritis and anemia ,how low does someone's blood count have to go before they need a transfusion.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: If the hemoglobin falls slowly, the body make adjustments to the change. If the person does not have symptoms, such as shortness of breath, medical treatment may be given rather than transfusion. The usual trigger for transfusion is hemoglobin of less than 7.0 gm/dL.
