Lower esophageal: sphincter is muscle that controls the entry of food from esophagus into stomach. Laxity or weakness in this muscle can cause GERD, which in turn can lead to heartburn, sore throat, or, in the long term, predisposition to pre-cancerous or even cancerous lesions.
