Abilify (aripiprazole) and bipolar : Not quite sure if you were asking about managing/treating bipolar of if you had concerns about increased Abilify (aripiprazole), (aripiprazole) so I provided an informational links in the comments. Also if you have concerns about the recent increase in Abilify (aripiprazole) I would encourage you to talk with your prescribing provider. If you would prefer a second opinion you might consider a consult with a healthTap psychiatrist. Be well.

Please clarify: Not sure what you are asking. Do you have a question about Abilify, (aripiprazole) eg. your recent dose increase, or about bipolar disorder in general? Please resubmit with a specific question so we may better respond. Thanks for using Healthtap. All the best.

What should I know if I am pregnant and taking medication for bipolar disorder?

Check with your MD: Many women with bipolar disorder have taken psychiatric medications during their pregnancies and have had successful outcomes. However, some medications are known to be unsafe in pregnancy, but other, newer medications are considered safer -- so, along with close medical supervision by your psychiatrist and obstetrician, you can lessen risk factors and experience a normal, healthy pregnancy.

How do you tell unipolar depression and bipolar disorder apart?

By symptom: Bipolar depression (bpd) cycles with mania (aggressiveness, grandiosity, insomnia, hypersexulaity, impulsivity) & is very frequently comorbid with anxiety. Unipolar depression is another name for medical depressive disorder (mdd). Bipolar-ii is like bpd, but it cycles from really depressed to less severely depressed, has no mania or hypomania, & is also called treatment resistant depression.

A 35-year-old member asked:

Is there a way to treat manic depression without taking psychiatric medications?

Dr. Donald Hazlett
Psychiatry 54 years experience
Not generally.: There are times when a manic person is so severely psychotic and grandiose that medication is not enough and shock therapy is used. Even then medication is required. Left untreated manic depressive illness can be fatal for a number of reasons such as suicide, severe risk taking behavior and accidental fatal overdoses of medication, street drugs or alcohol. Risks are high doing nothing.

S lithium the best treatment for bipolar depression?

Dr. Donald Hazlett
Psychiatry 54 years experience
None are best.: Lithium is one of a kind, our oldest but still very good treatment for mood instability in bipolar mania and depression. Antipsychotics and siezure medications are the other meds that treat bipolar disorder, lithium helps some with depression and is the only med proven to actually prevent suicide.Newer atypical antipsychotics help reduce depression in major depression and bipolar depression.

Environment/heredity: There is definitely an hereditary component to depression and bipolar disease although this does not mean your child will inherit them. These diseases are multifactorial. As important is the mental state you are in while raising the child. Make sure you are properly medicated to maintain your optimal mental health and have appropriate counselng.
