Break in period..: There are breaks and then there are breaks. Without knowing the severity of the fracture, stress or otherwise, it is impossible to assign a treatment regimen. No matter what the degree of injury, it would be most wise to avoid weight bearing as much as possible and use the crutches with the boot.

Varies: There are a variety of types of 5th metatarsal fractures based on part on the location of the fracture. Some represent little more than an avulsion fracture and you can weight bear immediately, others require strict non weight bearing for several weeks. All that to say you would to follow up with your doctor to know the specifics of your case.
