Waking boot: Most doctors place their patients in what's called a cam walker which is designed for you to walk in to make sure the fusion is well healed. In addition if in a cast and crutches then you need to get used to placing weight on it again.

To protect fusion of: Wearing the boot helps protect fusion of the joint. Your dr will take an x ray to determine if fusion of the joint is attained.
