I have a raccoon that we feed on occasion. it does not appear to be sick. should i be concerned that i could catch rabies from it without being bit?

Not without exposure: You will never know when or how this animal is exposed and becomes rabid. Any semi-tolerance of you while healthy can end with an aggressive change at any point, and the animal may carry the virus then.I would avoid any attempt at close contact.

Rabies risk: Please don't feed wild animals. It may seem kind but it ends up doing more harm than good. Rabies is not transmitted from a raccoon through blood, urine, feces or petting it. It is transmitted by saliva - if an infected raccoon bites you or licks its claw and scratches you (there are forms of transmission that are exceedingly rare).

Agree with Dr. F: If you have been exposed to saliva from the raccoon, you should consider getting rabies vaccine. Talk to your doctor to ascertain your specific circumstance. Wish you good health!
