8 years after degree: One has to first get an undergraduate degree to attend medical school, which usually takes 4 years. Then one must get their medical degree, which takes another 4 years. Then one must complete a 4 year residency program in psychiatry. Thus, it takes 12 years after high school or 8 years after completing your undergraduate degree (though some programs combine undergrad and med school in 6 years).
