Fellowship training: After medical school, a general psychiatry residency lasts 4 years. Becoming a child psychiatrist requires 2 more years of additional specialized training in psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families -- in an accredited residency in child and adolescent psychiatry. In some programs, one can begin this after completing the 3rd year of psychiatry training. Good luck to you!
