Manubrium: Your lump by your description is at the junction of the manubrium and body of the sternum and can be more prominent than the rest of the sternum. this is the most likely etiology.

The place you: describe is usually made of CARTILAGE since its FLEXIBILITY is necessary for breathing! You may have had an injury to that cartilage and it has become "hardened" (bony) It is not usually an important finding BUT it should be checked out!
