Hard to comment: Without knowing what they tested for or found on exam it is hard to comment on their approach.Most sore throats in kids are viral, but it is standard to do a quick strep test to see if antibiotics might help. If this was done and negative, a backup culture is done to be sure.If viral it can be many things including mono for which there is no treatment beyond supportive care.

Sore throat: A throat swab should be taken for strept infection and other bacterial pathogens.if positive she will need antibiotics. If negative, it's probably viral and symptomatic treatment will suffice, which includes ant- inflammatory medications, analgesics and antipyretics
