Insomnia: You might want to consider taking a "medication holiday" from the ambien (zolpidem) 1 or 2 days a week to help reduce tolerance from building up. On those days you can use Melatonin or other herbal remedies like Valerian root or chamomile tea. Good luck.

You can certainly: try melatonin but it is an essentially ineffective medication. You should see a good psychologist to uncover the reasons for insomnia and try some non medicinal methods rather than rely on medication all of which eventually fail.

Sleep apnea?: Most important is addressing your obesity, because you could be waking up every four hours just from sleep apnea. So this needs to be worked up further by your PCP as increased oxygenation at night may allow you to sleep better than using additional medication combinations, or even melatonin. It's important for the weight to come off first, so that you will have improved health, and sleep.
