Dunno but ...: You may have a second nail growing underneath. Either your regular doctor a podiatrist can take a look-see and help you solve your problem.

Location, location..: The location of the pain would help. Side(s) pain usually means the nail is ingrown. When the central part is painful, then there could be something growing under the nail. This growth can cause pressure on the nail bed which can make the nail plate seem to hurt. To remove all doubt, have your toe evaluated.
