I am a "Sputnik" baby. Actually watched it going overhead in NYC in 1957. Attended Caltech as Physics major and then grad school at MIT in late 60's. Somewhat disillusioned by our participation in Vietnam War. After grad school taught physics and math and decided to switch to medicine. Several fellow grad students also did. So while teaching took organic chem and other pre-reqs in evenings. Went to med school at Columbia Univ. in NYC. It is renowned for training superb clinicians which has been my intention. Amongst my guiding medical heroes are Sir William Osler. My favorite aphorism of his is:"Listen to the patient. He will tell you what is wrong with him". Another favorite is Francis Peabody's lecture on the secret of caring for the patient. His closing advise was that the secret in caring for the patient was in caring for the pat
