Ingrown toenail?: If the pain is at the edge of the nail, it may be growing down into the skin from cutting too short. Start with soaking and applying antibiotic ointment. See your doctor if it does not improve.

See a podiatrist...: It could be broken or there may be an upward growth of bone there - we call this a subungual exostosis. Both of these conditions are diagnosed by an x-ray.
