Subungual hematoma: Could be clotted blood from trauma, abscess if red from ingrown toenail, there are other possibilities as well, please see your doctor or a podiatrist.

Most likely: It is what is referred to as a subungual hematoma, as in a bruise under the nail. You may not even remember the trauma to the toe, as it doesn't take much force to create a bruise there. But if this is starting to cause pain, discharge, or fails to go away in the ensuing weeks, I would encourage you to seek an evaluation with your doctor as there are other possibilities.
