Access vs lymph node: If it is red and hot, then it may be an abscess or infection. It could also be a lymph node. If you have any head cold symptoms, this could just be a reactive lymph node, which is the body's way of gathering white blood cells to fight the infection. If you are feeling otherwise well, then it should be checked out, with possible labs, imaging and/or a biopsy.

Lymph node: What you describe is most likely a lymph node that is responding to infection or inflammation in the area it drains. In the position you describe the node would be draining the left side of face and ear as well as the teeth on this side. When the node is working it enlarges. When the inflammation or infection disappears from the area it is responding to the node is smaller and the pain leaves.
