A member asked:

If my mom has a trait for breast cancer, what is the possibility of me having it also?

Breast cancer: I understand your concern but relax for now. I have a 42 year old daughter who was very recently diagnosed with breast cancer and metastases. She is recovering, albeit slowly. It is extremely unlikely you will develop breast cancer over the next decades so please relax. There are many patients who do develop breast cancer but with very rare exceptions they will have the cancer under control.

Which trait: There are numerous different genes associated with breast cancer risk. So much depends on which "trait." With the BRCA genes, depending on which one the risk for breast cancer goes up to about 7% in your lifetime. There is also an associated risk of developing prostate cancer (25%) and increased risks of other cancer as well

BRCA Testing: The gene carriers for breast, ovarian and colon cancer are tested by the BRCA test that will tell you if you are a carrier. It is available in most laboratories via a MD order.
