A member asked:

Is renetidine more effective for acid reflux or nexium (esomeprazole)? which one has fewer side effects and how do they differ in terms of their action?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Nexium (esomeprazole) better.: We'd generally consider the proton-pump inhibitors (Nexium) to be stronger than the histamine-blockers (Ranitidine), all things being equal. They also provide longer lasting benefit throughout the day when taken regularly, and can assist in healing of ulcers where the histamine-blockers do not. For really bad symptoms, though, you could combine them and take them together.
