Injury: There may have been some damage to the joint or ligaments at the base of your thumb at the time of the initial sprain injury causing a chronic problem. If, after a suitable period of avoiding stress and strain on the thumb, you have persistent problems with the thumb, you should consult a hand surgeon for evaluation and advice as you want to prevent permanent damage to that very important joint.
