I just had an endoscopy and i was told that i have benign intestinal metaplasia. the doctor said to just monitor it with her. what are you recommendations? does this increase my risk for gastric issues? i have read that the increase is very minor?

Having this change,: intestinal metaplasia, means that normal squamous cells lining the esophagus have transformed into columnar mucosa cells.Many feel this results from a chronic irritation/inflammation, and possibly sets the stage for further cell change to cancer.That may happen, but probably rarely. Best to normalize exposures: treat H. pylori, avoid too many NSAIDs, alcohol, tobacco. Monitor with Doc as suggested

Metaplasia: Benign Intestinal metaplasia is a rather common finding on biopsies in the stomach. It almost never progresses on to anything important, but does need to be followed up, as your gastroenterologist suggests. Hope that helps.
