A member asked:

What does this mean? "duodenal mucosa with focal gastric mucin cell metaplasia." this is from a biopsy of my small intestine (duodenum)? i'm a 38-year-old male?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

While intestinal metaplasia in a stomach biopsy is considered a premalignant lesion, gastrin mucin cell metaplasia in the duodenum is not premalignant. .My understanding is that it's thought to result from a protective response to excess amounts of acid in the duodenum. Your gastroenterologist should be able to inform you more about this, though.
